Basic Function: The Healthcare Coding Specialist will code medical records utilizing ICD-9-CM and CPT coding conventions.  The coder will apply the appropriate diagnostic and procedural codes to individual patient health information for data retrieval, analysis and claims processing.  All work is performed in accordance with the rules, regulations and coding conventions as established by the American Hospital Association (Coding Clinic), ICD9, CMS, and Memorial Health System organizational/institutional coding guidelines.  Under the direction of the Coding Manager, the Healthcare Coding Specialist will perform all tasks and duties in accordance with established standards, policies, procedures, protocols, and guidelines.


 


 Requirements for this position include:


1.      High School Graduate required, Associate Degree or some post-secondary education desired.


2.      Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), Certified Procedure Coder (CPC), or RHIT/RHIA.


3.      Requires two years of directly related experience in abstracting and coding information from patient records using ICD-9-CM and the CPT-4 coding systems.  One year of inpatient coding experience preferred.


4.      Demonstrates excellent knowledge of proper use of ICD-9-CM and CPT-4 coding guidelines and principles. 


5.      Accredited training in Medical Terminology and Human Anatomy and Physiology required.


6.      Knowledgeable of Admission, Utilization Review, Billing and Collection process.


7.      Demonstrates comprehensive knowledge of Medicare DRG/APC reimbursement.


8.      Minimum typing skill of 40 WPM and/or 1 year CRT experience required.


9.      Demonstrates excellent interpersonal and communication skills.


10.  Demonstrates ability to work independently.


11.  Word processing/computer application experience and knowledge desired.  Coding software familiarity required.


12.  Prefer coding, health information management, physician medical office, registration or billing experience.
